The Hypocoristic forms of schoolchildern's names in Trhové Sviny

The diploma thesis deals with the anthroponymy, namely native (first) names and their hypocoristic changes in various emotional communication situations. Onomastics is introduced as a scientific discipline, the term anthroponym, birth name and hypocorism are also included. The practical part of the thesis captures birth names and their hypocoristic material in the selected locality, while the obtained material is then analysed both in terms of etymology (determining the origin and meaning of birth names) and word formation (recording trends in the way hypocorisms are formed).

WHAT WILL BE HIS/HER NAME? MOTIVATION FOR NAMING OFFSPRING Abstract The thesis deals with given names in general and in particular with motivation of parents to choice of name. The first part summarizes theoretical resources and deals with the history of researching of antroponyms. The first part further concentrates on given names, their origin, their function, variation of repertory and trends in motivation of parents to choice of name. The thesis also includes the chapter about legal regulation of given names. There is mentioned also the previous research on given names written by Miloslava Knappová in 1970's. The practical part of the thesis is based on questionnaire research on motivation of parents to choice of name. The research was carried out in Central - Bohemia Region, Liberec Region and Prague Region from December 2010 to February 2011 and respondents were the parents of children born between years 2005 - 2010. The aim of the research was to ascertain current trends and motivation to choice of name, which reasons are the most frequent and which reasons decrease in historical comparison. The practical part then deals with the relation between motivation to choice of name on one hand and age, educational attainment and place of residence of parents on the other hand. The topic of the bachelor thesis is the analysis of personal names and hypokoristics and nicknames created from them. The aim of the thesis is to provide data on anthroponym status in the current school environment. Due to the field of study, the material was obtained by means of questionnaires, which were submitted to pupils of the second grade of the selected elementary school. The research part follows the theoretical part, which deals with onomastics as a linguistic discipline and defines in more detail the issue of anthroponyms, birth names, hypocoristics and nicknames.

This bachelor thesis deals with first names in general, a particular attention is, however, given to their usage in communication, to the familiar modifications of first names and to the motivation of addressing by hypocoristic forms as well as to the origin of nicknames. Within the first part, all the theoretical themes are summarised. The focus is primarily aimed towards the overall setting of the issue within the field of onomastics and the role of antroponyms within the linguistic system. The theoretical part further focuses on first names, motivation of their origin, function, transformation of the repertory of first names and their function within communication, language characteristics and naming motives. The issue of first names is enriched with an interpretation about the usage of antroponyms and their auto-nominalisation and along with a historic development of the shift from single-naming towards double-naming. The key part of the theoretical section concerns hypocoristics, the development of the hypocoristic forms of first names, their usage within communication as well as specific categories of hypocoristics and their language and word-forming characteristics. Motivation of the Naming of Children in the District of Ústí nad Orlicí

The theoretical part of this work deals with the term of given name, its function and position in the Czech language system. Additionally, motivations that can play any role in naming of children are summarized. The practical part is focused on motivations applied in naming of children in Ústí nad Orlicí district at two groups of parental population. In the first group there are parents whose children were born in the period of 1960-1975 and the second group is formed by parents with children born in 2000-2012. The data from the parents were gathered using questionnaires. These two groups are compared from various points of view - used names, linguistics factors (length, sound aspects of names, relation of the given name to the family name, hypocoristics etc.) and other factors (family tradition, religion, education etc.). Also differences in the approach to male and female names are followed.
